Somehow, Someday
Show: ACROSS 跨, Now Place (San Francisco, CA)
Year: 2026
I had the joy of being part of the group show “ACROSS 跨”- a show of risograph artwork printed at postcard size (4×6 in), centered around the theme word “across.” The artists in the show explored the different ways that we cross boundaries, cultures, languages, places, etc.
I created my piece around the feelings I have about being Korean-American. Below is the artist statement I wrote for the gallery:
When I think about being Korean-American, I feel like I identify less with the words “Korean” and “American” and more with the dash between the two words. I know I’m American; I was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs my whole life and English is the only language I speak. Yet I know deep inside that I am Korean too. But I wrestle with understanding what part of me is Korean. I feel connected to the art and beauty I see in Korea, but to me the Korean part of myself feels like something unreachable and beautiful in the distance. I always hope that someday I’ll be able to cross that gap inside myself… if only I can figure out how to get there.
